The Impermanence of the Waffle Fry

Despite the religious right’s centuries-long efforts to hold the moral high road, the world continues to become more diverse culturally and philosophically.  One must only reflect on last 500 years to realize that humanity is becoming less disconnected, conservative, white, and homogenized.  Unfortunately, this slow transformation isn’t without it’s fair share of pain for the both the right and the left.  The left; is left to quandary why they must suffer through eons of discrimination for their progressive ideals.  The right; hypocritically damns us to hell for our many sins in an effort to keep the status quo in place.  

Given this paradox and the recent events regarding Chick-fil-A and the LGBT community, I’m reminded of the impermanence of the waffle fry.  As a Buddhist, I believe it resembles the auspicious endless knot and is representative of the interconnectedness between all sentient beings - both Right-Wing-Nut-Jobs and LGBT individuals alike.  In addition, I think it should provide us a lesson in impermanence.  Think forward 1000 years… will the waffle fry evolve from it’s place as the giant-sized and inferior relative of the french fry or is it destined to be the less than memorable accompaniment with a Chick-fil-A combo meal?  Will the makers of such a lackluster side item lead the world to be enlightened of the evils of the LGBT lifestyle or just continue to represent the ignorance and impermenance of the waffle fry.  The short answer - I suspect the latter.  

In some form, the meager waffle fry as well as it’s makers will eventually rot away and become a long distant memory as one of the many fast-food restaurants providing little or no nutritional or socially redeeming value.  Their posturing and the ensuing public reaction only serves to help them do what they do best - sell fast food.  So, whatever your politics, sexual orientation, education, religion or lack there-of, celebrate those businesses and individuals who try to make the world a better place for ALL people.  Most importantly, practice compassion to even those who’ve failed to realize the impermanence of the waffle fry.
